Thank you for your presentation Adela. This case study makes me think about a reality that we have here in this country and that has been proven. Those students that come from a different country and speak a different language are usually put into special education classes erroneously. In fact based on your observation and assessment with her teachers she began at a kindergarten level and then jumped to a second grade level. This is indicative of the issue we face in this country where immigrants are concerned. I hope one day we see the reality of these students and stop putting them into situations that are not the case such as in special ed classes. I hope that the Department of Education on both the Federal and state level will make a change and create classes and curriculums that assist new immigrants in learning the language and not in special education classes. Its apparent to me that your student Alexa needs to come out of a self-contained class and instead be in a regular ESL class that will benefit her most while allowing for a self-contained class to be open to those students that are truly disabled and require that type of instruction. I appreciate how you followed through with her and understanding the type of instruction that she would need through your lesson plans and activities.
